DanceTrippin asks... Sam Feldt
After last year's stunning party, the sensational Sam Feldt is back...bigger and better. Next Wednesday the Dutchman will be transforming Sloterparkbad into a warm, tropical party paradise for this year's Amsterdam Dance Event, with a host of top names joining in on the fun.
Here's another look at him in action at last year's event.
Without further a do, here's our exclusive Q&A:
Firstly, how much are you looking forward to this year's Amsterdam Dance Event?
I’m really looking forward to coming back to ADE this year. My party at ADE last year was amazing but my ‘Heartfeldt & Friends’ pool party is going to be even better. I’ve just finished my American Tour with Bakermat, so I’m looking forward to returning to Holland and playing to a home crowd.
What helped and influenced your musical style in the beginning days?
I’ve been into music from a young age. I had a drive-in show when I was 10 where my Dad would drive me to play kids’ birthday parties in my neighbourhood – this is where I started to develop my skills in selecting which music to play. When I was 17, I was on holiday and I saw Dutch DJ, Billy The Kit play in a nightclub. His set was full of energy and he had the crowd moving with the tracks he was playing. From then I was hooked, I wanted to do what he did but with my own productions and my own crowd. I experimented a lot with my sound, explored different styles of house in my productions.
How exciting is it to be a part of ADE’s first ever pool party for your ‘Heartfeldt and Friends’ night?
It’s such an honour to host ADE’s first ever pool party, I’m really excited! I’ve invited Kungs, Lucas & Steve, Klingande, Cat Carpenters, Ferreck Dawn and Lost Frequencies to come down and play with me, they’re all amazing artists - it’s set to be a great night.
Your single, ‘Summer On You’ with Lucas & Steve feat. Wulf, dominated the charts and radio airwaves worldwide. What have you made of the track’s success?
Releasing ‘Summer On You’ was one of my highlights this summer. Lucas & Steve, Wulf and I didn’t realise how big of a hit it was going to be – we all can’t believe it’s gone platinum in Holland! It’s such an amazing achievement and it’s great to know that my fans continue to love what I’m making. I feel incredibly proud of the track’s success especially back home in Holland.
You’re also no stranger to online success, with over 130 million streams and over 1 million downloads sold from your rework of Robin S’ ‘Show Me Love’. Do you find the modern digital era is something that suits you well?
Definitely, I think it is a really exciting time to be alive in. Music and new styles spread so fast and because of the rise of platforms like SoundCloud and Spotify, talent can easily emerge without needing the backing of a major label.
We’re loving your new single ‘Runaways’. How did the collaboration with Deepend and Teemu come about?
The Deepend guys and I have been friends for a while, we were just waiting for the right time to make a track together. We played a few shows together this year, including a night at Café Mambo in Ibiza, which was so much fun. We thought it would be great to put the energy from our sets into a song.
Showcasing your talent at Coachella, Ultra Miami, Creamfields, Ushuaia Ibiza and more – which part of the world has been your favourite place to visit and travel?
Every place I go to has it’s own particular coolness to it. For example, I recently did my first Asia tour and loved it. Such a different vibe over there, but the people really loved my music and danced like crazy. It’s amazing to see my music has become a worldwide phenomenon.
You’re set to bring beach-infused beats to the pool party. Will there be a noticeable difference in your style of play? Do you have any surprises up your sleeve?
It will be a set filled with Sam Feldt tracks, showcasing the tracks I’ve released over the past couple of years and of course there’s some new tracks I want to show you guys too. Make sure you attend this one!
At last year’s ADE, your party sold in just 9 hours. Are you expecting this year to be bigger than ever?
Definitely. The fact that my party is the first ever pool party at ADE is mind blowing, it’s going to be a party to remember.
Is there something more personal and special about playing in your home country than other places?
Yes! Playing in Amsterdam or in the Netherlands in general allows my friends and family to visit which makes the gigs so much more special.
With 2016 being hugely successful to you, is there anything else you have in store and beyond?
I have new music coming out very soon – watch this space. I just launched my fan engagement portal ‘Heartfeldt.me’, where fans can get one step closer to my world. I’m the first artist to have something like this, so it’s a very exciting time for me. Heartfeldt.me contains new and exclusive content, music, behind the scenes tour footage and competitions. Producers can also upload their demo’s for me to include in my radio show and sets!
